Dual-Type Cards Are Coming to Pokémon TCG Pocket

Pokémon TCG Pocket is about to change how types work. At PokémonXP, held alongside the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco, The Pokémon Company and DeNA confirmed that dual-type Pokémon arrive in the mobile card game this October, starting with Mega Mewtwo X ex. Here is what we know so far and why it matters for your deck.

What Are Dual-Type Cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket?

Until now, every card in Pokémon TCG Pocket has had a single Energy type. That is a big departure from the video games, where Pokémon like Mewtwo's Mega form carry two types at once. The new dual-type cards close that gap: a single Pokémon can now belong to two types at the same time.

According to the official announcement on Pokemon.com, dual-type cards start rolling out in October 2026 and kick off a new series of TCG Pocket expansions.

Mega Mewtwo X ex: The First Dual-Type Card

The poster child for the mechanic is Mega Mewtwo X ex, a Psychic- and Fighting-type. The card art shown at PokémonXP gives us a first look at its stats:

  • HP: 180
  • Attack: Dual Impact, 100+ damage. If a Stadium is in play, the attack does 40 more damage.
  • Weakness: Darkness (+20 damage)
  • Retreat cost: 2
  • Rule: Mega Evolution ex, so your opponent gets 3 points when it is Knocked Out

Because it is both Psychic and Fighting, it is reasonable to expect that it can benefit from support that targets either type, and that opposing attackers can hit it for weakness through either type. The official announcements have not spelled out the exact rules, so treat those details as likely rather than confirmed until the update goes live.

First Partner Pokémon Arrive as ex Cards

Dual-types are not the only news. You will also be able to collect first partner Pokémon as Pokémon ex cards, with Piplup ex and Fuecoco ex revealed so far. More partner Pokémon ex are expected to follow, which should make starter-themed decks far more competitive.

How Dual-Type Pokémon Could Change the Meta

Even without full rules, we can already see where this could shake up the game:

  1. Flexible deck building. Support cards that boost a single type become more valuable when one Pokémon qualifies for two of them.
  2. New weakness math. A dual-type Pokémon may be exposed to more attackers, which adds risk to the extra power.
  3. Fresh synergies. Pairing Psychic and Fighting support around Mega Mewtwo X ex could open up archetypes that did not exist before.

If you want to prepare, start saving your pack hourglasses and flex currency, and look at which Psychic and Fighting staples you already own.

What to Do Before the Update Lands

A few practical steps will put you ahead when the expansion drops:

  • Check your Psychic and Fighting cards. Staples from either type may pull double duty with dual-type Pokémon.
  • Save your resources. New expansions mean new packs, and early pulls of Mega Mewtwo X ex will be in high demand.
  • Watch for official rule text. The in-game card text and Pokemon.com patch notes will confirm exactly how weakness and type-boosting work for two-type cards.
