Natures

All 25 Pokémon natures, the stats they raise and lower, and the berry flavors they prefer.

What are natures?

Natures first appeared in Generation 3 with Ruby and Sapphire, and they've been part of every main series game since. Every Pokémon is given exactly one nature, drawn at random from a pool of 25, and most of them nudge the Pokémon's stats in a particular direction.

How natures affect stats

A nature is more than a flavor-text personality trait: it changes how a Pokémon's stats grow. Each nature boosts one stat by 10% and cuts another by 10%, with the full effect showing by the time the Pokémon hits level 100. HP is never touched.

Five of the 25 natures (Hardy, Docile, Bashful, Quirky and Serious) raise and lower the very same stat, so the two changes cancel out and the nature does nothing at all.

When picking a nature, the usual move is to sacrifice whichever attacking stat your Pokémon won't use. A Pokémon that hits with special moves gets nothing out of its Attack, so a nature that lowers Attack costs it nothing, and the reverse holds for physical attackers and Special Attack.

Take Espeon: it relies on special moves, so a nature that lowers Attack (such as Modest or Timid) trims a stat it was never going to use.

Berry flavors

Natures also decide which berries a Pokémon enjoys and which ones it can't stand. Every flavor is tied to one stat:

StatFlavor
AttackSpicy
DefenseSour
Sp. AtkDry
Sp. DefBitter
SpeedSweet

A Pokémon likes the flavor that matches the stat its nature raises, and dislikes the flavor that matches the stat its nature lowers. Neutral natures have no favorite and no least favorite.

A Sassy Pokémon, for example, has its Sp. Def raised and its Speed lowered, so it likes Bitter berries and dislikes Sweet ones.

Natures by stat

Know which stat you want to boost and which you can afford to give up? Find the raised stat along the left and the lowered stat across the top. Neutral natures sit on the diagonal in grey.
