Pokémon Winds and Waves Starters: Browt, Pombon and Gecqua
By PDB Editorial · · 3 min read
Pokémon Generation 10 has a name, a platform and three new partners, yet it is also the quietest big release on the calendar. Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, and with the 2026 World Championships behind us, here is everything confirmed so far, plus what to expect next.
What Are Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves?
Revealed during the Pokémon Day 2026 presentation on February 27, the paired games are developed by GAME FREAK and part of the franchise's 30th anniversary celebrations. According to Pokemon.com, they feature an open world with windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves, where Pokémon have developed their own unique ecosystems. Both versions launch worldwide at the same time, and the series adds Brazilian Portuguese language support.
Meet the Winds and Waves Starter Pokémon
Every generation starts with a choice, and Gen 10 offers three characterful options:
- Browt, the Bean Chick Pokémon (Grass type). It runs around energetically while photosynthesizing through the leaves on its brow. Lively but a little clumsy. Ability: Overgrow.
- Pombon, the Puppy Pokémon (Fire type). The area below its throat glows faintly from a heat-generating organ in its lungs. Guileless and friendly. Ability: Blaze.
- Gecqua, the Water Gecko Pokémon (Water type). It launches springy balls of water from its tail and is very intelligent, maneuvering shrewdly while putting on airs. Ability: Torrent.
The classic Grass, Fire and Water triangle is back, so the choice comes down to personality and playstyle. Browt is the cheerful underdog, Pombon the loyal friend and Gecqua the show-off.
Version Differences and Special Pikachu
The trailer also showed version-specific outfits for the player characters and two special Pikachu variants: Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. That suggests each version leans into its own theme, one shaped by wind and the other by water, though the full list of version exclusives has not been revealed.
Why Fans Are Waiting for News
Anyone hoping for fresh details at the 2026 Pokémon World Championships and the debut PokémonXP fan festival in San Francisco was left empty-handed. There was no new trailer, gameplay footage or Pokémon reveal for Winds and Waves. Some leakers claim there will be no concrete news between Pokémon Day 2026 and Pokémon Day 2027, and a Nintendo Direct remains a possible window, but none of that is confirmed. Treat any specific release date you see online as a rumor until Nintendo or The Pokémon Company says otherwise.
What to Do While You Wait
You do not have to sit idle until 2027:
- Pick your starter early. Read the official profiles and decide which type matches the way you like to play.
- Clear your backlog. Pokémon Champions, Pokémon Pokopia and the current TCG Pocket updates all keep trainers busy.
- Watch official channels. Pokemon.com, the official Pokémon YouTube channel and the Pokémon Day broadcast are where real announcements land first.
- Browse the Pokédex. Revisit past starters and their evolution lines to learn what Gen 10 might borrow.
The Bottom Line
Pokémon Winds and Waves promise an open-world ocean adventure on Nintendo Switch 2, three appealing starters and a 2027 release. The details are thin for now, so we will update this guide as soon as new trailers, Pokémon or a release date are confirmed. Which partner would you choose: Browt, Pombon or Gecqua?
