Out of This World: Pokémon and European Space Agency Blast Off for World Space Week 2026
· 3 min read
Pokémon has conquered video game consoles, trading card tables, and augmented-reality mobile screens across the globe, but the iconic franchise has officially breached Earth's atmosphere. To mark World Space Week 2026 (celebrated worldwide from October 4 through October 10), The Pokémon Company International has joined forces with the European Space Agency (ESA) for a stellar galactic collaboration.
Combining cutting-edge space science with beloved characters, this multi-faceted campaign brings real-world astronomical exploration directly to Pokémon fans, museum visitors, and mobile gamers. From an actual Pikachu plush orbiting Earth aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to limited-edition merchandise and themed in-game events, this historic partnership is designed to ignite curiosity about the cosmos for a brand-new generation of explorers.
Pikachu’s 67-Day Journey Aboard the Space Station
The centerpiece of this grand celebration is a custom-suited Pikachu plush that spent over two months living among the stars. Handcrafted in a miniature replica of an ESA astronaut outfit, the plush launched into low Earth orbit on April 11, 2026, riding aboard a Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo spacecraft bound for the ISS.
Under the care of French ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, Pikachu settled into life aboard the orbiting laboratory. During its mission, the plush spent an astounding 67 days in orbit, completing approximately 1,040 revolutions around Earth before returning safely aboard a SpaceX Dragon cargo capsule on June 17, 2026.
Following its return to terra firma, Adenot and Pikachu were featured in a special homecoming celebration at the ESA Headquarters in Paris, France. Photos and videos documenting Pikachu floating in microgravity and peering out through the station’s Cupola windows were unveiled, offering fans a unique vantage point on human spaceflight.
Interactive Science Exhibitions Across Europe
Beyond orbital photos, the ESA and Pokémon are leveraging this cosmic journey to educate and inspire. The collaboration features an interactive exhibition series touring scientific facilities and museums across Europe through April 2027.
Designed to introduce young minds to astrophysics, space exploration, and planetary science, the exhibits pair iconic Pokémon with real-world space missions. Visitors can explore how scientists monitor solar weather, study distant galaxies, and operate spacecraft throughout the solar system. Participating venues include world-renowned institutions like the Science Museum in London, Cité de l'espace in Toulouse, the Deutsches Museum Nürnberg, and Valencia’s Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, alongside major ESA facilities such as ESTEC in the Netherlands and ESOC in Germany.
Highlighting the educational ambition behind the project, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher emphasized the importance of engaging youth, stating that "inspiring future generations is a key part of ESA’s mission."
Blast Off in Pokémon GO: Astronaut Pikachu Arrives
Trainers unable to travel to Europe can still join the celebration in-game. According to the official Pokémon GO World Space Week announcement, a global in-game event runs from Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 12:00 a.m. to Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time.
The event marks the debut of Astronaut Pikachu, wearing the signature spacesuit featured in the ESA partnership. Players can battle and catch Astronaut Pikachu in One-Star Raids or claim encounters by completing free event Timed Research tasks. Lucky Trainers might even encounter a Shiny Astronaut Pikachu! Note that Timed Research rewards must be claimed before Monday, October 12, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time.
Additionally, the collaboration bridges digital gameplay with real-world science centers. From October 4, 2026, through April 30, 2027, players visiting participating science museums and ESA venues across Europe can participate in location-specific Pokémon GO activities. These include venue-based One-Star Raids featuring Astronaut Pikachu, special research assignments, and increased encounters with space-themed Pokémon.
Cosmic Merchandise: Gear Up for Exploration
To complete the launch, both organizations have debuted exclusive gear for collectors and space enthusiasts. As highlighted on Pokemon.com, collaboration products are available through the Pokémon Center and the ESA online shop.
The Pokémon Center lineup features authentic plush replicas of the Astronaut Pikachu that flew aboard the ISS, an ESA flight bomber jacket, and space-themed Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) accessories such as playmats, deck boxes, and card sleeves. Meanwhile, the official ESA shop is offering Pikachu-themed apparel, tote bags, pins, and stationery featuring artwork of Pikachu alongside real European space exploration vehicles.
Final Thoughts
By pairing the universal charm of Pokémon with the genuine wonder of human space exploration, The Pokémon Company and the European Space Agency have delivered an unforgettable World Space Week 2026 event. Whether you are catching Astronaut Pikachu in Pokémon GO, exploring an ESA exhibit in Europe, or picking up commemorative merch, there has never been a better time to look up at the stars and dream big!
